At a special board meeting Wednesday, 鈥檚 Board of Education selected a contractor to build the new high school, which officials hope will be complete by June 2026.

The board awarded the building contract to 天美传媒 Construction Co., which had the lowest base bid at $81,525,000.

鈥淚 really appreciate the opportunity 鈥� to be able to propose on this project. It is a very important project for the community, and we realize that, and we realize the importance of being on time, in budget and delivering it safely as well,鈥� Ryan Diekemper, vice president of preconstruction at 天美传媒, said at the board meeting. 鈥淲e are very committed to that.鈥�

The district began with eight contractors and narrowed them down to four after holding a pre-bid meeting in May.

The board approved the聽听产测 in June.

The 180,000-square-foot high school鈥檚 address will be 815 Camp Jackson Road/Illinois Route 157, directly southeast of the former Parks Air College and current Cahokia Heights Fitness & Community Center. The whole campus will sit on 48 acres the city of Cahokia Heights donated to the school district.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for October 18 at the new high school鈥檚 address.

鈥淭his will be a beacon as Cahokia Heights take the next step toward doing some quality things,鈥� Ed Hightower said at the board meeting.

District 187 brought the veteran metro-east educator on as a project consultant and board representative for the new high school project last December. Hightower is serving in a聽, which is building a new elementary school.

The current Cahokia High School is about 73 years old. According to the district鈥檚 most recent safety survey in 2012, the school had about $26.47 million in health and life safety repairs between the four buildings.

Now, district officials estimate the school needs more than $30 million in repairs.

The new school is being financed with聽聽the district issued in March in addition to about $20 million in funds the district built up in its budget by supplanting some of its expenses with COVID-19 relief funds from the federal government.

District 187 didn鈥檛 have to seek voter approval in a referendum due to an exception provided by the state legislature when it passed the fiscal year 2024 budget implementation bill.

The district has been on the Illinois State Board of Education and Capital Development Board鈥檚 list of pending applications for school construction grants since fiscal year 2005, but state funding for that program dried up around that time and only specific projects addressing emergency needs have been approved in recent years.

The district also held two bond referendums for the high school in the early 2010s that failed.

held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, August 15, to celebrate the grand opening of its newest Elementary School. 天美传媒 Construction served as the construction manager and worked as the architect for the new 67,000-square-foot two-story elementary school, which replaces the outdated elementary space formerly located in two separate buildings. Construction began in Fall of 2022 and was completed in time for the 2024-2025 school year.

Located at 209 W 9^th聽St. in Pana, Ill., the new Elementary School is broken down into two main zones. The first zone features the public and shared use areas, which include the administrative office, art, commons, food service, and ICC 500 Storm Shelter-rated gymnasium on the first level. The second floor includes a secondary administrative area, music, STEM learning areas, and a library/media center.

The second zone is the designated educational zone, organized with the PK-2 located on the first floor, and the 3rd -5th grades on the second floor. The classrooms wrap around the sides of the central gym, with quick access to and from that area. The campus also features an outdoor learning environment with a 1/8-mile walking path and three playgrounds tailored to different age levels. For student safety, a designated bus route will be created that is separate from the general parking.

Phase I renovations entailed significant asbestos abatement, HVAC system replacement, and interior finish upgrades to the second floor. Richland County Elementary School opened in January of 2000 with the merger of three elementary schools in the district. Since then, multiple elementary school reorganization efforts have taken place, from closing an aging elementary school to adding one through the annexation of the West Richland School District into the county-wide district. 聽Additionally, Richland County has seen growth in its Pre-K Programs over the past few years.

天美传媒鈥檚 construction management team engaged in early preconstruction planning to work through not only means and methods of constructing the second story addition above the existing classroom wing, but also engaged its Corporate Compliance Team to ensure constructability details such as first floor structural bracing enhancements were critically examined, discussed, and vetted with the architectural and engineering team prior to implementation.

Like most school districts, scheduling and cost constraints are critical. With the district having flexibility of remote learning, the team implemented a plan to get started early to ensure the district would be ready to safely return kids back to school on the first floor in the fall, on schedule.

Construction and renovations are anticipated to wrap up in fall 2021, with students using the entire facility beginning January 2022.

聽celebrates the completion of a $31.5 million addition and renovation of Richland County High School (RCHS) located in Olney, Illinois. Construction Manager 天美传媒 Construction Company and designer BLDD Architects were engaged to modernize the education facility, improve safety and security, and increase accessibility for the 2,400+ student district, while creating a 21^st Century learning environment for the students, staff, and community.

The renovation of Richland County High School included demolition of an aging auditorium and classroom areas; a new single main entrance for enhanced safety and security; major accessibility, architectural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades; and installation of a new fire sprinkler and alarm system. A new wing was constructed utilizing precast concrete and features a new auditorium, fine arts theater, cafeteria, kitchen, common areas, and an auxiliary gymnasium.

Multiple energy-efficient elements such as LED lighting and extra insulation to control heating and cooling loses have been incorporated into the design.
